It seems that there is a hot debate on the value of doing virtual sports (such as those played on a Will) versus real sports. After evaluating the arguments of each side , I believe that that virtual sports , in spite of their own values , could not replace real sports mainly because of the following reasons : the greater health benefits in both physical and psychological aspects brought by practicing real sports and the shortcomings of virtual sports.

To begin with, the physical intensity of virtual sports are less than actual sports and one could only exercise some parts of the body in virtual sports, which suggests that virtual sports are not physically beneficial to us.  Taking “Wii” sports as an example, under most circumstances, only movements of players’ hands and arms are necessary but not their legs, not to mention the whole body. In contrast, doing real sports such as swimming and running requires nearly every muscle of your body. Moreover, you can also improve functions of your organs and blood circulation through such sports. This demonstrates that real sports could improve our physical health more than virtual sports. Despite the fact that virtual sports could move parts of our body, their influence is not as significant as real sports.

Apart from improving fitness, doing real sports also contributes to mental health. One can practice indoor sports like gymnastics, dancing and figure skating which enhances the sense of beauty, and subsequently boosts our self-esteem. Participating in team sports also provide us opportunities to make new friends, enlarge our social circles and learn to cooperate with each other. Moreover, uutdoor sports such as hiking and cycling let us inhale fresh air, to take a leave from the busy city and to refresh our souls. These examples reveal that practicing real sports can improve our mental health through developing our sense of beauty, increasing our self-esteem and improve our relationship with others. All these psychological benefits cannot be found by playing virtual sports which explains why we should put real sports as priority.

Some may say virtual sports give us more convenience, especially for those who have a busy lifestyle. However, virtual sports, especially those played on television, will bring burden to player’s eyes, which is detrimental to our health. Nowadays, teenagers have already spent a lot of time using computers and smartphones and therefore it is not healthy for them to face the monitors even in times of doing sports. Furthermore, because of the instant excitement brought by the virtual sports games, players could easily become addicted in virtual sports which could be even worse to their health eventually. Since virtual sports could bring disadvantage to our health, it should not replace real sports which in opposite improve our body.

In conclusion, virtual sports have their values and are suitable for busy people. Nevertheless, they cannot replace real sports. because they cannot improve our body and mind while real sports can. The virtual sports may even become harmful on our health because of addiction. Therefore, I personally think that virtual sports are better than none, but it cannot fully serve the function of real sports.
